A leader is someone who leads or commands. Although leadership styles may vary, all leaders have something in common. All leaders have a vision and they are motivated to achieve it. Macbeth and Beowulf were different types of leaders. Macbeth was viewed as an evil leader and Beowulf as a great leader.
Macbeth and Beowulf both became kings. Their journey to kingship was different. Macbeth and his prophecies made him take a different route to his kingship. He was willing to do anything in order to become and stay king. Beowulf on the other hand earned his kingship with good deeds.  They both had obstacles to overcome but they went about it differently.
A leader is an individual usually looked up too. Beowulf indeed was looked up too. He was a great leader in the eyes of his people. He sacrificed himself getting killed in order to save his. On the other hand Macbeth killed people in order to remain king. Instead of saving and doing good deeds for his people, he was killing them. Beowulf’s death resembled death for trying to protect his people, while Macbeth is killed by his own thoughts and conscious.
Macbeth during his journey to kingship had someone by his side, He had Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth influenced him to do certain things. In contrast Beowulf did not. He did receive an offer from grendels mother he could not give up. The influence of these females had a different effect. Lady Macbeth influenced Macbeth negatively to hurt others while Beowulf only hurt himself.
In conclusion, Macbeth and Beowulf had two different leadership styles. Good vs. evil. They used their powers differently. Macbeth was an evil leader people disliked while Beowulf became leader because people choose him. They were both viewed as leaders whether good or bad.

 Beowulf

By: Isabel Goicochea

Beowulf, an epic story passed down for decades. Since it is an epic, it has been orally passed down. Translations of Beowulf vary. There are various noticeable likenesses and differences in its translations. This story varies in text versus film. A few visible differences between text and film are the reasons behind his attack to herot, what happened to Grendel’s mother, and Beowulf becoming king at the end of this epic.
The reasoning behind Grendel’s attack in the text differs from what is seen in the film. It is said in text, that Grendel attacked Herot because he was curious to see what the humans did while they were quiet. In contrast, in the film it is shown that he decided to attack Herot because he could not stand the noise. Herot was too loud and he disliked the noise. Those are two very different reasons for him deciding to attack Herot. Also in regards to his attack, in film he attacks while they are In the middle of a celebration but in text that is not the case. In text he attacks while everyone is sleeping.
Grendel’s mother is described a demon type figure in the text. What you see in the film is not a demon. You see a human like figure. She does posses demon like qualities and can turn into a dragon. Beowulf is told to defeat Grendel’s mother. In text we are made to think that Beowulf did indeed defeat the monstrous creature (Grendel’s mother). In the film we see that Beowulf fell for Grendel’s mother. Grendel’s mom promised Beowulf riches, and to become a powerful king. She seduced him, and ended up kissing. There is no way he killed her, yet he went back up to Herot claiming he had killed her.
One last difference is Beowulf’s ending. He indeed became king after all the battles. What changes in the film is what place he became too. In the text we are told that he became king of Sweden. In comparison Beowulf became king of the Danes in the film. He becomes king for 50 years.
In both film and text the main message of the story is the same. The way things occurred is what changes. The attack, the meeting with Beowulf’s mother and becoming king are a few major differences.  They have the same characters, and setting but the events change. You will notice that most of the time when stories are made into films directors have to change a couple of events or the manner in which they occur for sales. The main event and idea will remain the same.

Elephant Shot To Death !

This Morning in Moulmein , Lower Burma the constables were notified of something that seemed to be causing a big distraction. The station was flooded with calls regarding this situation.
It all started Tuesday morning around 10:30 am . A sub inspector at a police station on the other side of town called Constable Orwell about an elephant that seemed to be ravaging the bazaar. He informed constable Orwell that its mahout was not it town therefore it could not be tamed.  Constable Orwell set out to the scene. He set out on a pony with a .44 Winchester. As he arrived to the scene he was greeted by the sub-inspector and Indian constables. They led him to the elephant , and indeed he found the elephant. The elephant no longer seemed to be heated , rather he was eating quite peacefully. He believed everything was

alright , until a lady started screaming for a group of kids to step away from a dead body . The elephant had previously trampled  over a  Dravidian coolie. As soon as he saw the body of the dead man ,  constable Orwell sent for his elephant riffle. After hours of deliberating whether or not to shoot the elephant , constable Orwell decided the best course of action would be to put the elephant down. He shot five times. Still the elephant was not dead. He used the bullets from his .44 Winchester to finish him off. Before he could even walk away , people had nearly finished removing  his skin.  The mahout was outraged by the death of his most prized possession.
People are questioning whether or not this was the best choice ? Could the shooting have been avoided?  Constable Orwell is now under investigation by the Indian constables union.

The Devil and Tom Walker Character Analysis

In the story " The Devil and Tom Walker " , I can infer many things about the characters . I know that Tom Walker is miserly by direct characterization .The author states so in the story , " a meagre miserly fellow of the name of Tom Walker ". Tom is also described as fearless by indirect characterization. The author says " Tom was a hard minded fellow , not easily daunted.  I can also infer that her husband (Tom) was sneaky and nosy , due to the fact the author says " Her husband was continually prying about to detect her secret hoards . . . " . W e can infer by indirect characterization that Tom has morals and will not trade a human in for anything. In  the story the author states " He proposed , therefore , that Tom should employ it in the black traffick ; that is to say , that he should fit out a slave ship , this however Tom resolutely refused.Towards the end , we can also infer that Tom Grows a Fear for the devil. We can infer that by this following sentence " Tom had a lurking dread that the devil , after all , would have his due. We can see through out the story his personality as described changed a little bit.
Next in the  story Tom Walkers wife is introduced. By direct characterization we can tell she was miserly as her husband . It is stated in this story " He had a wife as miserly as himself " . She is described also as " Toms wife was a tall termagant , fierce of temper , loud of tongue , and strong of arm " . With that being said we can infer that she is a  built woman that does not take anybody's crap.Thru Indirect characterization we can infer that She is Greedy. It is said "Whatever the woman could lay hands on she hid away ". By the end of this story we can make a guess that she died. After she had gone to speak with the devil. "Tom seized the check apron , but , woful sight ! found nothing but a heart and liver tied up in it " , therefore we can conclude that those are her remains and she has died.
Finally the last Major Character is " The devil". He is known by various names  in this story. We Know he has a gruff voice by direct characterization. The author Described him very well .The author states " a great black man " , and" neither negro nor Indian ". We know by direct characterization that he was dressed in a rude , half Indian garb , but had a red belt or sash around his body , but his face was neither black nor copper color , but swarthy and dingy and begrimed with soot ". We can infer thru indirect characterization that in return for anything that devil would want the person's soul . Given this sentence " There was one condition which  need not be mentioned , being generally understood in all cases where the devil grants favors"  , we can almost instantly think what the devil wants is a soul in return.
There are many themes in this story. One of the biggest showed was "Greed" . Throughout the story for the desire of money and wealth , Toms wife was willing to compromise with the devil. Toms Wife was greedy for material things , while the devil I feel was greedy for souls since we could infer that is what he wanted in return for his favors. Another theme is betrayal . I see it in this story because Toms wife was willing to in a way go about betraying Toms trust for wealth. Tom on the other hand betrayed a friend when he opened up a brokers business lending money . Ambition seems to almost be like greed . It is also a theme because they all had ambition for something whether it be money , wealth , or more souls. I believe those are the biggest Themes shown in this story .

The Ugly Duckling

The Childhood Story i am writing about is " The ugly duckling" . The moral of the story to me is to not judge based on someone or somethings  appearance , As well as learning to accept ourselves. You never know how much you can hurt someone with your words and actions. In the story,  the duckling  is over and over again teased by his appearance . He is constantly made fun of , leading him to get up and go and have a low self esteem . what we as people have to understand is that no one creates themselves we don't choose what we will look like once we are born .Not all that matters is the looks , you don't know how beautiful a person can turn out to be . We also Have to learn that we have to love ourselves or no one else will .
