Elephant Shot To Death !

This Morning in Moulmein , Lower Burma the constables were notified of something that seemed to be causing a big distraction. The station was flooded with calls regarding this situation.
It all started Tuesday morning around 10:30 am . A sub inspector at a police station on the other side of town called Constable Orwell about an elephant that seemed to be ravaging the bazaar. He informed constable Orwell that its mahout was not it town therefore it could not be tamed.  Constable Orwell set out to the scene. He set out on a pony with a .44 Winchester. As he arrived to the scene he was greeted by the sub-inspector and Indian constables. They led him to the elephant , and indeed he found the elephant. The elephant no longer seemed to be heated , rather he was eating quite peacefully. He believed everything was

alright , until a lady started screaming for a group of kids to step away from a dead body . The elephant had previously trampled  over a  Dravidian coolie. As soon as he saw the body of the dead man ,  constable Orwell sent for his elephant riffle. After hours of deliberating whether or not to shoot the elephant , constable Orwell decided the best course of action would be to put the elephant down. He shot five times. Still the elephant was not dead. He used the bullets from his .44 Winchester to finish him off. Before he could even walk away , people had nearly finished removing  his skin.  The mahout was outraged by the death of his most prized possession.
People are questioning whether or not this was the best choice ? Could the shooting have been avoided?  Constable Orwell is now under investigation by the Indian constables union.
